Agostinho 'Gus' Barbosa
Native of Portugal who became community liaison for Newark Fire Department and honored civic leader, 'gave generously of his life, his heart, and his capabilities,' 93
On Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, Agostinho (Gus) Barbosa, passed away at the age of 93.
Gus was born on March 4, 1925, in Murtosa, Portugal. He moved to the United States in 1940, where he joined his parents living in Lodi, N.J. In 1943 Gus moved to the Ironbound section of Newark, N.J., where he met and married the love of his life, Domingas, in 1946.
Gus worked for Goldsmith Leather Company until 1972. He then joined the Newark Fire Department as a community relations coordinator, where he remained until his retirement in 1991.
Gus gave generously of his life, his heart and his capabilities in family, career, and community. He touched many lives through the multiple organizations that were greatly enriched by his dedication and generosity of time and talent. Gus was honored by the Ironbound Boys and Girls Club as 'Citizen of the Year' in 1985. In 2011, he was named grand marshal of the Portugal Day festival.
Gus was preceded in death by his adored wife, Domingas. He is survived by his sons, Frank Barbosa and Augie Barbosa (Peter Ragano), as well as countless friends and a 'special granddaughter' Helena Coutinho-Goncalves.
His presence will be missed but he will never be forgotten.
The funeral for Gus will be on Friday, Feb. 22, 2019 at 8:30 a.m. at the Buyus Funeral Home at 426 Lafayette Street, Newark, N.J. Thence to Our Lady of Fatima Church, Newark, where at 9:30 a.m. the Funeral Mass will be offered. Interment is in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, N.J. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend. The visitation for Gus will be on Thursday, Feb. 21, from 5 to 8 p.m.
