Donald Gill Sorensen

Donald Gill Sorensen passed away August 4, 2018. He passed quietly at home, surrounded by the love of family and friends.

Creating community was one of Don's defining qualities. Once he made a connection, through his volunteer work or daily life, he treated friends like family; from the local barista to his doctors and caregivers. Don's generosity was well known, be it taking the time to help a neighbor with a project or baking his famous chocolate angel food cake for a friend's birthday. He cherished sharing his love of cooking with his grandchildren, teaching them to bake his trademark biscuits, and make jams and applesauce.

Born in Los Angeles, Don was a fourth generation Californian. He attended high school at Harvard School for Boys (now Harvard Westlake), and graduated from Stanford University ('57) before serving two years active duty in the Army and seven years active reserves, attaining the rank of Captain.

Don received his MBA at University of Denver ('61), where he met and married the love of his life, Irene Butsch, in 1961. They returned to Los Angeles and began their respective careers in accounting and teaching.

In 1972 they moved their family to Bishop, California. Don served on the Bishop Elementary School Board, was a long time 4-H leader and a member of Bishop Lions Club and Sunrise Rotary, and chair of the Sunset Rotary Slager Foundation. He was elected Inyo County Auditor four times and serviced as president of the California County Auditors Association. Don retired from public service in 1997, and in 2007, he and Irene joined their 2 children and 5 grandchildren in Seattle, WA.

Don is survived by his wife, with whom he shared 57 wonderful years; his son Stan and wife Mary, their children Robert and Grant; his daughter Kira-Anne Sorensen-Jones and husband Chris, children Kate, Elle and Callum; and his sister Joanne Reno of Rancho Santa Fe, CA.
