Benedict J. Koziol

Benedict J. Koziol passed away September 11, 2018 at age 99.

Born to Antoni and Anna (Misiaszek) Koziol in Ware, Massachusetts in 1919, he was never far from airplanes. Ben was a veteran of WWII where he served as a flight engineer in the Army Air Corp. He later received his aeronautical engineering certificate from the University of Chicago. Afterwards, his career spanned 41 years at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft where he became a liaison between the company and the US Air Force for the U-2 program. He travelled and lived in many places including Turkey, Germany, Norway, South Korea, Texas and Connecticut.

Upon retirement in 1989, Ben moved to the Northwest with his family and spent many summers at their Whidbey Island beach house as well as their Seattle home. He was called out of retirement by the National Reconnaissance Office and the Department of Defense to be a speaker at the 40th anniversary of the U-2 in Washington, DC where he received a bronze commemorative medal. Ever after, he referred to the experience as his 15 minutes of fame.

Ben is survived by his wife Barbara of 54 years, son Scott (Dale Herter), and daughter Susan Andrade (George), his sister Helen Michalski of Ware, MA and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (heroes.vfw.org).
