1933 ~ 2018
Our beloved mother, wife, sister, granny, aunty and friend, Barbara Welkie, died peacefully October 8, 2018 surrounded by friends and family. She had recently been diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor. Love, acceptance and humor epitomize her life. Barbara Evelyn Chizlett was born in London, England in 1933 and grew up during the London Blitz. She completed training as a registered nurse at the Westminster Hospital in 1954. Like her sister before her, she sought adventure, so she crossed the pond to work in Milwaukee Wisconsin. There, she met George W. Welkie, who was completing his PhD at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. They married in 1957 and moved to Logan Utah where George taught at the Utah State University while she worked at Logan Hospital. Eventually, she transferred to the pediatric practice of Drs. Carlisle, Hlavaty and Stowell at the Budge Clinic, where she was adored by patients and families alike for many years. She was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, serving in numerous capacities including, the standing committee, choir, altar guild, vestry, knitter of prayer shawls and genuine caretaker of many. Barbara was a founding member of the Before Cleo (BC) club where she shared fine food, drink and conversations with some of the most wonderful women on earth for the better part of a century. She was an amazing mother and gran, making each person feel loved and special. She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Jonathan whom she loved dearly. She is survived by her husband, George W Welkie; children, Robert Welkie, Katy Welkie (Audrey Bramwell), and Carol Nielson; sister, Jennifer Brooks; grandchildren, Justin, Elliot and Isaac; and loving nephews and nieces. A celebration of her life will be held in Logan, UT at St. John's Episcopal Church on December 1, 2018 at 3:00 pm and followed by a gathering in the Champ Hall. In lieu of flowers, please donate in her name to St. John's Episcopal Church for the Choral Scholars fund or .
