Salt Lake City, Utah-Betty June Kiley passed away peacefully on January 20, 2019. She was born June 23, 1925, in a farm house near Drayton, ND, to Stanley A. and Ethel Preppard Chester. She attended grades 1-8, in a one room school, then graduated from Drayton High School, in 1944, with a class of eight girls and one boy.
On January 23, 1946 Betty June married Earl S. Kiley, they later divorced. Although she never had children of her own, she loved children. She also loved animals of all kinds, big and small.
Betty June was raised in the Methodist faith but after working with missionaries, from the Mormon faith, became a convert and has been a faithful member of the LDS Church since then. As a member of the church she held many callings which included two missions, one was in the North Central States Mission and the other in the Family and Church History Mission in Salt Lake. The missionaries, emphasized the importance of family history, which Betty June took seriously and worked hours searching for her family and doing their temple work.
To serve her country, Betty June, joined the United States Navy Reserves in 1956, as an Ensign and served until she was honorably discharged, with the ranking of lieutenant, in 1975.
Like many converts she left North Dakota for Salt Lake City where she was hired as a nursing assistant in the psychiatric unit at the Salt Lake County Hospital. Betty June had dreams of becoming a nurse, with encouragement from the staff to at least try, she graduated from the University of Utah with a BS in Nursing, in 1955. She went on to achieve a Master's degree in Nursing Education and Administration from the University of Washington, in Seattle in 1962. She directed the School of Nursing, in Grand Rapids Michigan, for 11 years. Upon returning to SLC, Utah she was ready for a change and passed the Realtor exams necessary to get into the real-estate market, on her first attempt. She became a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Club, through the Salt Lake Board of Realtors, in 1989. She retired on her 65th birthday.
Betty June is preceded in death by her parents, one brother, three sisters and her dear friend Margie. She is survived by one sister, Verna, who lives in Alaska.
A viewing will be held at the Salt Lake Olympus Stake Center, 2675 East 4430 South, Holladay, Utah, Thursday 1/24 from 7pm-8pm and Friday, 1/25 at 9:30am with funeral services following at 11am
