Alexander Russell Ferrell

1960 ~ 2017
One year ago, we lost our brother and friend, Alex Ferrell. It has taken a year to be able to write his obituary.
It is with great sadness that I share the fact that Alexander Russell Ferrell of Salt Lake City, UT passed away as the result of a motorcycle accident up East Canyon on Friday, September 29, 2017. Alex was born in 1960 in Houston, Texas. He was only 57 at the time of his passing, but boy-oh-boy were they full years!
Alex is survived by his sisters Nina Ferrell (Bill Bruno) of Holladay and Dana Benson (Rick Vosburgh) of Kentucky and most importantly, his treasured cat, Fuzz Butt. He is also survived by his many, many friends and associates who also loved him dearly. Although Alex never married and never had any children that we know of : -), he created a large network of friends and companions from his many and varied interests and hobbies. His mother, Ruth Eileen Ferrell, of Illinois and Florida and father, Charles Milton Ferrell, of Houston, Texas are deceased. He was very close to his mother and took care of her until her passing in 1998.
Alex was a fearless, wild and wooly guy with a brilliant and curious mind. He attended the University of Utah and majored in Political Science and Anthropology and loved to debate his opinions on society, politics and just about anything else. One of his great joys was trying to get a rise from folks by saying something to elicit an outraged reaction. He was also very childlike in his delights and indulged them with abandon. His sister's nickname for him was Renaissance Troll as it captured the mixture of his talent for invention, mechanics, art and also his foul language and the crusty temperament he could exhibit. His work included charter boat captain, gun shop owner, fiberglass boat repair, photographer, stained glass artist, custom gunsmith, fly fishing guide, rod maker, snow groomer, and landlord among others. Most of his skills were self taught and there was nothing he could not learn when he was determined.
We are all going to miss his energy, laugh, support and honesty. He was one of the most unique people you could meet and was larger than life. He died doing something he loved, living on his own terms and for that we are grateful.
A celebration of his life was held at a friend's home for close friends and family after his cremation on Saturday, October 7th, 2017. The family thanks everyone for their support, love and wonderful stories about their Alex adventures. A special thank you to Tim, Steve, Doc, Jeff and Susan for all their help in managing the estate and supporting his family.
