Anna Lewis
1929-2018
Anna Lewis, of Houston, Texas, departed this life peacefully with her family at her side on October 14, 2018.
In 1929 Anna was born in Patmos, Greece to the late George and Calliopi Koutsanellou. She was also preceded in death by her late husband, Nick Lewis, infant son John Lewis, son-in law, Larry Senkel, and sisters Evelyn Michalinos and Irene Giannakis.
Anna grew up during the Italian Occupation of Greece in World War II. She is fondly remembered by her siblings for making dolls, sewing beautiful garments, and even making shoes. Her sewing skills continued to grow as she steadily became a master seamstress and recreated designer clothing for her daughters.
Coming to America in 1946, she met the love of her life, Nick Lewis, and they married in 1951. While raising her two daughters, she instilled the Greek language and traditions by faithfully attending Sunday liturgy and participating as an active member in the Patmian Society. Anna wrote Greek poetry and lyrics up until her final days.
As a grandmother and great-grandmother she continued cooking her special dishes by popular request up until her last months of life. Her fondest moments were serving Sunday family dinners, china and all. Anna or "big Yiayia" as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be deeply missed. Her family is eternally grateful to God to have been blessed by this compassionate and remarkable woman who made such a tremendous impact on all their lives.
Anna is survived by her daughters, Carol Lewis Senkel and Maria Lewis Younger, son-in-law, Jack Younger, Sr., grandchildren, Natalie Senkel Kirklin and her husband, Bradley Kirklin, Nicholas Senkel, and his wife, Mary Senkel, Jack Wade Younger, Jr, and his wife Ayaka Younger, Cristina Younger Stacy, and her husband Adam Stacy, great-grandchildren: Annabeth Kirklin, Lauren Kirklin, Mac Kirklin, Woody Senkel, Susie Senkel, and David Stacy, siblings: The Very Reverend Efthimie Koutsanellou, Loukia Koutsanellou, Maria Valvis, Evangeline Gazis, and Margaret Meyer.
Pallbearers include George Gazis, Bradley Kirklin, Gus Michalinos, Nicholas Senkel, Adam Stacy, Raul Suniga, Jack Wade Younger, Jr., and Jack Wade Younger, Sr. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family on Friday, October 19, 2018 from half past nine o'clock until half past ten o'clock in the morning at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and the funeral service is to be conducted at half past ten o'clock in the morning also at the Cathedral. A private burial will follow.
The family would like to thank her loving and supportive caregivers and hospice nurse, Sheila Ann Edosomwan, Rachel Cooper, and Robert Rossi.
