Alfred Joseph Calloway, who was the ultimate community and public servant, made his transition on Friday, Sept. 28th. He was born on June 14, 1941 to Clarence and Yvette Calloway. After graduation from Phillis Wheatley High School, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
Al was elected to the Houston City Council in 2000 representing District D until 2005. Following his service on City Council, Al became a member of the Executive Staff of both Mayors Bob Lanier and Lee P. Brown. He was quite instrumental in the establishment of the African American Museum at the Gregory School and the coordination of various City departments and programs, including Houston Department of Health and Human Services and the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities.
He later retired as a Justice of the Peace for Harris County and continued to serve as a Visiting Judge in the Harris County Justice of the Peace Courts.
Al leaves to cherish his wonderful memories his loving wife, Lynda Calloway; daughter, Keitha Farrington (Alexander); his brothers, Kenneth Calloway (Sandra) and Troy Calloway; and a host of many other relatives and close friends.
Services will be held at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church at 1501 Jensen Dr.; Viewing & Kappa Omega Service on Friday, Oct. 5th, 5-8 pm; Homegoing Service on Saturday at 11:00 am.
