Alexander M. Ierubino, 88, of Toms River, N.J., died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018.
Visitation is Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Oliverie Funeral Home, 2925 Ridgeway Rd., Manchester, N.J. Funeral Liturgy is Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Lake Church, Lakewood, N.J. Entombment will follow to St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery, Lakewood.
Born July 2, 1930, in Newark, N.J., Alexander was a 1948 graduate of Seton Hall Prep, where he played basketball, and a 1954 graduate of The Ohio State University. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving two years in France.
He worked in the Newark public school system for 35 years, first as a recreation teacher at Ivy Street School and Dayton Street School, then as a physical education teacher and department chairperson at Vailsburg High School, where he also served as golf coach; and lastly as a vice principal at Broadway Junior High School.
An avid golfer, Alexander was a past president of the golf club at Lake Ridge, an adult community in Toms River, and also gave free lessons to community residents. He also participated in Lake Ridge's Bowling Club, Wine Club, Italian Cultural Club, and Men's Club. He lived in Toms River for the past 23 years after living in Gillette, N.J., for 27 years.
Alexander was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Filomena; his sister, Anne Marie Mansfeld; and his son, Michael. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Frances (Roselli); son, Thomas, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
