Donald John Vollmer

Faleceu

Donald John Vollmer, 90, died December 29 at his son's home in New Lenox. He had been in hospice care for two years. A longtime resident of Chicago Heights, he was born July 16, 1928 in Collingswood, N.J. College brought him to Chicago and he graduated from Northwestern University in 1950 with a degree in business. He served in the United States Army before joining General Motors Acceptance Corp. in 1956, as a credit analyst. In 1960, he married Mary Jane (nee Heinzmann). Together for 53 years, she preceded him in death. They raised three sons, and he was active for many years in the parish life of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Chicago Heights. There he served as a longtime usher at masses, and as basketball coach. He was a member of the Lions Club. He loved sports, (taking delight in rooting against the Cubs) and could show off an encyclopedic knowledge of sports statistics, fueled by a vast collection of baseball cards and reference books. He was also an avid stamp collector, especially of German stamps. He retired from GMAC in 1988, after 32 years. For many years after, the home he and Mary Jane owned on Memorial Drive remained a gathering place for family and friends. He is survived by his sons, Richard James (Mary Ann) Vollmer of Ogelsby, Rev. William John Vollmer of Western Springs, Thomas Joseph Vollmer (Lori Cecil) of New Lenox; and six grandchildren, Mary Kate Vollmer, Sarah Vollmer, Michael Vollmer, Hannah Vollmer, Emma Vollmer, and Joseph Vollmer; a brother, James (Sandra) Vollmer of St. Charles, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Joliet Hospice. Visitation will be January 2, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1501 Chicago Road, Chicago Heights, IL. Funeral Mass will be January 3, 10 a.m., at the Church. Interment will follow at Assumption Catholic Cemetery, 19500 S. Cottage Grove Ave., Glenwood, IL.
