Bev passed away in the early hours on Thursday, November 15, 2018, surrounded by her family after a long decline from Alzheimer's Disease. She was 78 years old. Bev Welther was born in Miami, FL, on January 17, 1940. She was educated at Miss Harris' School in Miami, followed by The Dana Hall prep school in Wellesley, Mass, then earned her BA degree at Duke University where she joined Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and met her future husband, Fred Welther. After their marriage, Bev and Fred settled in Falls Church, VA, and Bev worked at National Geographic Magazine for several years before having three sons. Bev was preceded in death by her youngest son, Blair, who died of cancer on February 12, 2002 at the age of 28, by her husband, Fred, who died on February 14, 2016 at age 77, and her parents, Dr. Maurice and Ethel Heck. Her father, Dr. Heck, practiced medicine in Florida and served as a captain in the US Army medical corps in Panama during WW I. She is survived by her much loved sons, Fred II (wife Joanne) and Michael (wife Susan); six grandchildren, Frederick Lee II and Megan Welther, Emma, Leigh, Max, and Sarah Welther; her sister, Margaret Frazer of Fort Pierce, FL; and many friends in the Falls Church area. A celebration of Bev's life will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, 4444 Arlington Blvd., Arlington, VA, 22204, on Saturday, December 1 at 5 p.m. followed immediately by a reception. Memorial donations in Bev's memory may be made to the Blair Welther Cancer Research Fund and sent to Johns Hopkins University, 750 E. Pratt St., Suite 1700, Baltimore, MD 21202.
