PARDEE ARTHUR E. PARDEE JR. Arthur E. Pardee Jr., age 94, a retired federal official at the U.S. Department of State and the National Science Foundation, died on November 10, 2018. Mr. Pardee was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on December 27, 1923. During World War II he served with the U.S. Eighth Air Force in Europe. He graduated from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in 1949. He was enrolled in a graduate program in public policy at George Washington University from 1951 to 1954. He had resided in Montgomery County, Maryland, since 1952. Mr. Pardee began his government career with the U.S. Department of State following his participation in the Civil Service JuniorManagement Intern Program in 1950. He subsequently served as Executive Officer in the Office of the Secretary of State from 1950 to 1962, under Secretaries Dulles and Herter. Mr. Pardee was appointed Executive Director of the Bureau of International Scientific, Technological and Environmental Affairs in 1962. During this time he also served as Director of the Department's Scientific and Technological Attaché Program. He continued his government career at the National Science Foundation from 1976 to 1981, where he was responsible for U.S. science cooperation programs in Europe and the former Soviet Union. Following his retirement from government service in 1981, Mr. Pardee was appointed Senior Associate for International Science and Technology Policy at SRI International (formerly Stanford Research) in Arlington, Virginia. Concurrently, he served as consul- tant to the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Joint Oceanographic Institutions Inc. Mr. Pardee was the author of a number of international science policy and survey studies and co-authored the book, "Cooperation in Science and Technology: An Evaluation of the U.S.-Soviet Agreement, 1972-1981." The National Science Foundation bestowed its Meritorious Service Award on Mr. Pardee in 1981. He was a member of the American Foreign Service Association. Mr. Pardee was predeceased by his wife, Mary Katherine, of Bethesda, Maryland, and is survived by his children, Rosemary (Richard) Slocum, of Ashton, Maryland, Kit Pardee of Kensington, Maryland, Philip Pardee, of Bethesda, Maryland, Christine Miller, of Middleburg, Virginia, a grandson, Andrew L. (Margaret) Holz MD, and three great-grandsons, William, Daniel, and Lucas Holz of Sacramento, California. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Horan, and her daughter Mary of Cheshire, Connecticut and a niece Betsy Agostinucci of Middletown Connecticut.
