HERNDON Betty T. Herndon (Age 92) Of Rockville, MD, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2018, at Suburban Hospital. A lifelong resident of the Washington, DC area, she was born on September 25, 1926, to Harry W. and Eleanore Townshend and raised on the family farm in Mitchellville, MD. After graduating from Towson State Teachers College (now Towson University), she taught at University Park (MD) Elementary School from 1947 to 1954, before taking a break from her career to raise her four children. She was a third-grade teacher for 17 more years beginning in 1969 at Whetstone Elementary School in Montgomery Village and was beloved by students and their parents. Betty was married to George L. Herndon of Washington, DC, for 36 years until his death in 1986. Her life was filled with a variety of activities, including leadership in PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization), nurturing her grandchildren, volunteer work, bridge groups, book club, attending local theater performances, and doing water aerobics well into her 80s. She enjoyed extensive travels with her husband and others. A gracious host and wonderful cook, Betty regularly invited family and friends for holiday celebrations, birthdays and visits. She loved reunions and attended them often with her Towson classmates. She also hosted an eagerly anticipated annual family week at Rehoboth Beach for 15 years preceding her death. Betty continued sharing her love of education after retirement by reading monthly to first graders. During the late 1980s, she was honored to serve for two years as a member of the Service Academy Review Board for former Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland. A loving and generous mother, her survivors include four children, Anne Noordhoff of Stephens City, VA (David); Paul Herndon of Alexandria, VA; Dent Herndon of Mt. Airy, MD; and John Herndon of Raleigh, NC (Michelle). She also adored her five grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher, Lauren, Nicholas and Brian and her great-grandson, Liam. Betty is predeceased by a brother, Harry W. (Jack) Townshend, Jr. Visitation with family will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, at Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church, 610 S. Frederick Ave., followed immediately by a service in the church sanctuary beginning at 12 noon. A private interment will occur later. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to PEO Program for Continuing Education and sent to the PEO Executive Office, Treasurer's Department, 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50312.
