Alice DeLong SteeleJune 20, 1934 - June 28, 2018Born in New London, Connecticut and raised mostly in upstate New York, Alice came to San Francisco in 1967. Her first job in California was at KQED in the fund raising department. Later, as a volunteer, she was a reader on the KQED radio program "Newspapers for the Blind."

For many years she was an executive secretary at Haas Brothers, and a wine & spirits distributor. Alice was a Past Matron of the Golden Gate Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. In retirement, she was active at the Center for Learning in Retirement (CLIR) where she served as President in 2001-2 and, for many years helped edit the newsletter. An avid photographer, she was active in Photochrome, the local camera club. She was also a weaver, a painter and a reader.

She was predeceased by her husband of thirty-three years, R. Spencer Steele, a City Planner who, at one time, had been San Francisco's Zoning Administrator. Lacking living family, Alice surrounded herself with several generations of honorary nieces and nephews.

In her 70s, Alice helped found A Woman's Eye Gallery where she exhibited her photography and watercolors. A memorial "exhibit" and reception will be held at AWE Gallery, 678 Portola Dr. SF on Sunday, August 12 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM.
