He was born in Chicago and moved to Miami at the age of 7 and graduated from local schools, Riverside, Ada Merritt and Miami High where he played baseball and football; and his fondest memory was playing before 40,000 fans in the Orange Bowl. At his beloved U of F, he was a distinguished member of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity. Always the Proud Gator, he told his grandsons that fraternity life was designed for him! He enjoyed the camaraderie and made life long friends. Bernie graduated in accounting which became his life's passion. Drafted in 1951 he served in the Korean Conflict and returned a decorated veteran; Sergeant First Class. His 65 year accounting career in Miami and New York began at Haskins & Sells, partnerships in several large Miami firms and ended with KSDT&Co., where he joyfully worked until his final days. Bernie held positions on the Florida State Board of Accountancy and the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He was member of Temple Beth Am for 48 years. He played tennis, handball and softball and took much pride in coaching his son's baseball team. He was predeceased by his parents Morrie and Edith Swichkow and his brother Irwin Swichkow. Bernie's love for his family shaped his life. He adored his wife Rita of 37 years, and their children; Ronald and Leslie Swichkow, Lori Swichkow Lynch and John Lynch, Richard and Ilisa Hoffman, Mitchell and Alicia Widom and Glenn and Ellen Widom.
