GORDON, BERNARD NATHAN "Bernie" The kind and caring soul of Bernard "Bernie" Gordon of Aventura, FL, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2018. Born in Chicago, IL on September 4, 1925, he will be sadly missed by his beloved wife of 72 years, Dolores, and his cherished children; son, Mark (Ana Maria), daughters, Nancy Platt, and Sandy (Gaetan Cormier). He will be lovingly remembered as Poppy to his five grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Bernie met the love of his life, Dolores, in Chicago on a blind date on New Year's Eve. Bernie, then 18, and Dolores, 17, were instantly charmed with one another. Two years later the duo were married with their mothers' consents. For more than 72 years, they enjoyed spending as much time together as possible and dedicated much of that time to helping others. After a successful career in the Midwest with trips to nearly every country in the world, the family settled down in Florida where Bernie and Dolores pursued a second career: volunteerism. Always together, they became volunteer assistant teachers at Highland Oaks Elementary School. As advocates for those less fortunate they were appointed Guardian Ad Litem where they helped children alleged to be abused, abandoned, or neglected in foster homes. The Gordons began working with the Aventura police department in 1999. Bernie had said, "He and his wife had done everything from fingerprinting children to car chases. But they have mercy on us now and give us some safer tasks," he laughed. The same year, they both began working at Aventura hospital, moving between the operating and recovery rooms to make sure doctors' patients were brought in on time and to let families know when and if they could visit. Always generous of his time and devoted to helping others, Bernie will be deeply missed by his friends, family and all who knew him. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, located at 20400 NE 30th Avenue. Interment private.
