January 26, 1931 - October 19, 2018 Ann O'Malley Knowlton (Annie) passed away peacefully in her home in Laguna Beach, California on October 19th, with her husband, Jack, of 67 years and family by her side. She was born in Phoenix, Arizona on January 26, 1931, the daughter of Edward Valentine O'Malley (E.V.) and Virginia Mets O'Malley (Dee Dee). Annie grew up in Phoenix, attending Kenilworth Elementary School and North Phoenix High. She attended college at Marymount in Los Angeles and then the University of Tucson, following in the tradition of her mother and grandmother. At U of A, her studies and interests were in the Humanities and she pledged Kappa Alpha Theta. She worked as a fashion model, appearing in catalogs and magazines, including the cover of Colliers. In 1951, Annie married John Warren Knowlton (Jack) of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. They began married life at Stanford where Jack completed his studies, later moving to the Louisiana oil fields where they had their first two children, Sharon and Leslie. From there they moved to Long Beach where they had Jill and Dono, and then onto Emerald Bay in 1960. More recently, they shared their time between homes in Phoenix, Flagstaff and Laguna Beach. Annie loved and excelled in tennis, scrabble and bridge where she would delight in the conquering of any opponent. She was free with advice and darn if she wasn't always right. In fact, we wish we had asked her to collaborate on this obituary so she could have corrected our grammar, style and punctuation. She loved to travel the world with friends, organizing excursions to Mexico, Europe, Africa and Asia, with Spain being her favorite. Together with Jack they effortlessly entertained, even when the dinner guests spoke not one word of English. She was a great companion and offered support to Jack in his numerous business travels to oil fields all over the world. Annie participated in several Orange County charities, including Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), International Student Exchange (AFS), Junior League, as well as marketing for Vic Braden Tennis Camp. She had a quick wit and was always interested in what her friends and family were doing, often commanding, "Sit down, tell me more about that." Her curiosity led her to guide a Great Books Club for several decades furthering her study of the literature and cultures of the world. She is survived by her husband, brother, four children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A celebration for family and friends will be at Jill's home in Arizona on Friday, November 23rd from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. A second celebration will be announced in Laguna Beach around the Christmas holidays. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations in Annie's name may be sent to R.M. Pyles Boy's Camp https://www.pylescamp.org/.
