July 13, 1954 - November 3, 2018 Anne Elizabeth Hyvärinen, born in Ann Arbor, Mi, age 64, formerly of South Pasadena, passed away in St. Paul, MN after 3 years of staving off ovarian cancer. Her embodiment of the Finnish word 'sisu' sustained her through these grueling years. Despite the difficulties, she never lost her exuberant love of being alive nor her happiness in being with her friends and family. While growing up in International Falls and Duluth, MN Anne was always interested in creating art and in the world of theater. At the University of Michigan, where she studied Anthropology, she also worked in their theater productions. After working with the Grand Portage Indian Reservation's transfer of management from the Radisson Hotel Corporation and later for Great Midwestern Book Show, she became involved in doing theater-set work in Minneapolis. In the following years in New York City, she worked as a scenic artist in the theaters. She moved to Los Angeles to pursue scenic art in the motion picture industry and subsequently worked in films all over the country, sometimes relocating for long periods of time, especially to Portland, OR and San Diego, CA. She joined the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Motion Picture Set Painters & Sign Writers union and helped her coworkers to become members. In her 30 years as a motion picture scenic she worked on over 48 films and TV shows, including "My Own Private Idaho", "Sleepless in Seattle", "Fargo", "Sideways", "A Prairie Home Companion", "Talladega Nights", "Hitchcock", and "The Birth of a Nation". She was nominated for two Art Director's Guild awards: "A Serious Man" in 2010 and "Feud: Bette and Joan" in 2018. She also won the Art Directors Guild award for "Call of Duty: Ghosts" in the 2013 Commercials or Music Videos category. Her siblings--John (Kim), Eva (Thomas Eaton), Georg--and nephew Thor will all greatly miss her. Also grieving her loss are her cousins in the USA and Finland, along with her many close friends and her numerous work colleagues. Anne was preceded in death by her parents: Matti J. Hyvarinen and Margaret Virginia (Dunn) Hyvarinen. We will scatter her ashes at Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN following the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program's use of her body for teaching. A memorial gathering will be held in a few weeks at a yet-to-be determined time in Minneapolis, MN. Memorials suggested to Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance or Planned Parenthood.
