Alvin "Babe" Malstrom, age 95, passed away August 23, 2018, due to complication of age. Babe was born April 18, 1923 in Jamestown, California, the son of Clarence P and May E. Wright Malstrom. He was the youngest of eight children.
The family moved to Sandy in 1927. Babe attended Sandy Elementary and Junior High schools and Graduated from Jordan High School in 1942.
After High School, Babe went into farming with his father and brother. He took over the management of the farm in 1959. Babe has lived in the same home since 1927. The family raised chickens and 25 acres of fruit orchards. He served on the Board of Directors of the Sandy Irrigation Co. until retiring from farming. He also served on the Board of Directors for the South County Community Council at the Copper View Center and Board of Directors of the Salt Lake County Horticulture Association in the 1940's. He is a member of the Sandy Businessman and Property Owners Association. He helped to organize the Association and it was in operation in the 1970's and early 80's. He was active in Sandy politics and ran for the Sandy City Council ("Thank God I lost," is what he always said after losing the election). Babe was a life member of the National Rifle Association. He was a very active member of the Sandy Museum Board of Directors and also an active volunteer. He donated several handcrafted grandfather clocks to use for fund raising for the museum. While with the museum board he served as Treasurer. He was awarded the outstanding citizens award from the Utah State Chamber of Commerce and the Sandy City Mayors Award of Excellence in 1995.
In 2002, Babe received the Coveted Noal Bateman Service Award for long-term commitment to the community of Sandy. He was a behind the scenes worker, never refusing anyone a favor. Babe was also known for his woodworking expertise.
He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Colleen Malstrom Pacconi, Joan Leona Muir Sorensen, Janice Malstrom Dumas, Loris Malstrom Nelsen, Sharon Zupan, Jack Zupan, Wayne Zupan and Raymond Zupan.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Willis E., Clarence F, Glenn L, Vernon J, Malstrom and sisters Leona M Muir, Lucile Zupon and Doris Zupon.
A special Thank You to those who gave special care to Babe in his final years. He appreciated their service beyond words. Also, a special thanks to the staff at IMC who provided him comfort and support in his final days.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 27, at 11 a.m. at Anderson & Goff Mortuary, 11859 S. 700 E., Draper, where there will be viewings Sunday 6-8 p.m. and Monday one hour prior to the services. Interment, Midvale City Cemetery. www.goffmortuary.com
