DABBIERI ANN SHIELDS DABBIERI June 24, 1921 - August 16, 2018 Ann Shields Dabbieri, 97, widow of CAPT Peter V. Dabbieri, USN (Ret) passed away quietly on August 16, 2018 in the company of family at The FAIRFAX, the nonprofit Army Retirement Residence Foundation community at Fort Belvoir, VA. Ann was born on June 24, 1921, in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. At the start of World War II, Ann and her older sister Isobel joined the Royal Navy as WRENs. When the United States entered the War, Ann was assigned to support US Naval forces because of her typing and shorthand skills, and it was there she met and fell in love with a dashing young U.S. Naval officer. On the eve of his being deployed into France in September 1944, Ann and then LCDR Dabbieri were married in Belfast, N.I. At the conclusion of the War in Europe, then CDR Dabbieri rejoined his new bride and together they convoyed across to America where Ann began her new life as the wife of a career Naval Officer. Over the course of the next decades Ann and her husband had six sons and together the family traveled to various postings in the US and overseas finally ending up at the Pentagon in 1961. In 1969 following his Retirement, the family moved to Indianapolis, IN where CAPT. Dabbieri accepted a position as a civilian with the Naval Air Systems Command. Ann became a widow in 1982 and subsequently moved to Charleston, SC where she resided until early 2013 when she moved to The FAIRFAX to be close to two of her sons. Over the years Ann became a good golfer and a World class bridge player achieving Life Master status. Ann is survived by all six of her sons, CAPT Peter V. Dabbieri, Jr. USN (Ret) (Nina) of Redondo Beach, CA; COL Ronald A. Dabbieri, USA (Ret) (Donna), of Alexandria, VA; Jonathan S. Dabbieri (Julie) of Coronado, CA; Joel D. Dabbieri of Miami Beach, FL; David K. Dabbiere (Melinda) of Atlanta, GA; and Alan J. Dabbiere (Ashley) of McLean, VA. She is also survived by several grand and great-grand children, nieces, and nephews. Ann will be laid to rest with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests tax deductible donations be made on-line to the Army Retirement Residence Foundation - Potomac (http://www.arrfp.org/blog/) to help residents of The FAIRFAX in financial need, who, through no fault of their own, out-lived their retirement funds, and don't have the blessing of family to lean on. This allows residents to remain in their home at critical times when skilled nursing may be needed.Ann will be laid to rest with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
