Alberta Mae TremontMay 12, 1941 - July 29, 2018Alberta Mae Tremont, known as "Bert," passed away peacefully with family by her side on Sunday, July 29th at Atria Foster Square in Foster City, California at the age of 77. Bert was born in Pilot Knob, Missouri to Joe Frank Spain and Ethel Louise (Burr) Spain. At the age of 17, she accepted a transfer with Pan American Airlines that took her to the San Francisco Bay Area which became her home until death.

Bert was raised Baptist and then converted to Catholicism prior to her marriage to James "Jim" Frank Tremont on June 29, 1963. They were married 55 years and raised two children - Lisa Tremont Ota and James Russell Tremont. A woman of deep spiritual faith, Bert was an active member of St. Luke Catholic Church in Foster City as well as Trinity Episcopal Church in Sutter Creek. She shared her beautiful voice in the church choir and was very active with Cursillo, serving as Rectora in 1984 and hosting 4th day meetings at her home for many years. Bert honored her Native American Cherokee ancestry by continuously expressing appreciation for nature's many forms of beauty. This was especially exemplified through decades spent at their cabin in the Motherlode Country and annual visits to Yosemite National Park with family and friends from her deeply cherished church community. She also loved to travel the world, most especially to visit her son and daughter-in-law, Daisy Yuan, in Shanghai. Bert created a warm and welcome environment for all who entered her home and was very generous with her time and many talents. Her greatest joy in recent decades was spending time with her grandchildren, Eric and Matthew Ota, who called her 'Moma.' She fostered in them an appreciation for life's simple pleasures, like eating ice cream and taking time to smell the roses. In the words of her grandson, "If Moma didn't see a friend in the grocery store, she made one before she left."

Along with her husband, children, and grandchildren, Bert is also survived by her brothers, Arch and Bruce Spain, seven nieces and nephews and 17 great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Gerald Spain.

Even while dementia overtook her life, she sang and shared a warm smile until her final days. How about that?!?!

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 29 at St. Luke Catholic Church, 1111 Beach Park Blvd., Foster City. A Celebration of Life will follow at 12:30 p.m. in the Lagoon Room of the Foster City Recreation Center, 650 Shell Blvd., Foster City.
