George M. Snider Licensed clinical alcohol/drug counselor, helped numerous people throughout his life, 76 George M. Snider, 76, of Bay Head, N.J., formerly of Cedar Grove, N.J., passed away on July 28, 2018. Visitation will be on Wednesday, Aug. 1, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove. Services will begin on Thursday, Aug. 2, at 9 a.m. at the funeral home. The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Cedar Grove, with interment at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Montclair, N.J. Born in West Orange, N.J., to the late Richard and Grace Snider, George lived in Glen Ridge, N.J., and in Cedar Grove for over 40 years before moving to Bay Head. George was licensed by the State of New Jersey as a clinical alcohol/drug counselor. For 25 years, he was the alcoholism coordinator for the County of Essex, N.J., retiring in 2000. He was instrumental in creating the first county Employee Assistance Program within the state, and was the director of intoxicated driver resources (IDRC) for the county. He helped establish a Mentally-ill Chemical Abusers (MICA) program for patients in the Essex County Hospital Center, and created a MICA advisory board within the hospital. He was a diplomate for the American College of Professional Mental Health Practitioners. He was also an adjunct professor at Bergen Community College and Montclair State University. After retiring, he was a consultant to various start-up rehabilitation centers and trained employees and interns in proper procedures. He and his wife, Jean, were members of the first parish council of St. Catherine of Siena Church, and he was a basketball coach for the St. Catherine of Siena School girls' basketball team for 14 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Jean (nee Maher); children, Kathleen Snider, Greg Snider (Dave Hunt), Stacey Orlick (Steve), George Snider (Amy); grandchildren, Madison, Dalton, Devon, Matt, Jason, Kevin, Gavin, and Anna; siblings, Dr. Richard Snider (Margy) and Margaret Brooks Foristall (Lynn), and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.
