Betty J. HarringtonMay 11, 1922 - July 17, 2018Long-time San Francisco resident Betty Harrington died on July 17, 2018 at the age of 96.

Betty was born Betty Jean Elscott in Newton, Iowa in 1922 and attended Newton High School and Iowa State College. She married high-school sweetheart Robert Harrington in 1946, following his return from World War II, where he was the pilot of a B-24 bomber that was shot down over the Netherlands in August 1944. He managed to successfully evade capture and was sheltered by the Dutch underground until liberation in April 1945.

Betty and Bob relocated to San Francisco in 1950 and became quintessential City-dwellers, moving into a beautiful 3-story house on Green Street in Cow Hollow in the mid-1950s. Betty worked in various secretarial and book-keeping jobs, and later managed the administration of Bob's consulting business in the construction and earthquake-safety field. She was active in the Metropolitan Club and loved the Giants and bridge parties with her many Bay Area friends, and was known for her stylish elegance and sardonic Irish wit. She and Bob enjoyed travel and knew every inch of San Francisco by heart, and loved socializing all over town with their gang known as Five Bobs and the Alphabet Girls.

In 2000 they sold their Cow Hollow home and moved to The Sequoias in Japantown, where Bob died peacefully in 2009 at age 89. Betty is survived by her sister, Beverly Starrett, of Grinnell, Iowa.
