BRUCE STEWART BAKER  
Of Leesburg, VA, died on July 1, 2018. Bruce was born December 20, 1945, in Swananoa, NC; the son of the late William K. Baker and Margaret I. Stewart. He is survived by his wife Allison C. Chin, sister Ann K. Baker (Tony Jackson), and brother Brian D. Baker (Dot Brovarney, Meghan Baker). Bruce became a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1993. He was a distinguished researcher and professor at the University of California San Diego (1976-1986), Stanford University (1986-2008), and Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Janelia Farm (2008-2016). Bruce touched so many people and opened up so much possibility through his passion for scientific rigor, teaching and mentoring. His quiet and profound warmth were a gift. He was also an avid gardener, cat whisperer and adventure traveler. He loved being outdoors and, particularly, in the mountains. No public memorial service is planned.
