MELNICK, ARNOLD DO Retired Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost of the Health Professions Division of Nova Southeastern University, died July 12, 2018. He was predeceased by the love of his life and best friend, Anita (Slipakoff), his loving wife of 63 marvelous years. He is survived by his beloved son, Sandy Dean Melnick, MD, his wonderful daughter-in-law, Nona, and two grandchildren, Rachel Louise Melnick(Ryan Balogh) and Steven Harris (Megan) Melnick, both of whom he loved dearly. Also, surviving are his sister, Lila Grossman, and three godsons Kenneth (Suzie) Shear, Yonathan (Michal) Shear and Daniel Berger. He attended Philadelphia public schools and received AB and MA Degrees from Temple University and DO and MSc degrees from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, as well as an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Nova Southeastern University. During his 30 years in pediatric practice in Philadelphia, he was chairman of pediatrics at two hospitals and a faculty member at three medical schools. In 1980, Dr. Melnick entered a second career as Founding Dean of the Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine in Miami, and through its growth and amalgamation, he became Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost of the Health Professions Division of Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale. He served as the chief operating officer and led in the establishment of five additional health professions schools along the way. Active in numerous professional and related groups, he achieved the presidency of chairmanship of 13 national and regional organizations and held the honor of Fellow in five professional associations. In addition, he was honored by various professional organizations with 18 Distinguished Service Awards. Most recently, he was inducted by the American Osteopathic Association as one of the first 40 Great Pioneers in Osteopathic Medicine. On his retirement from medical education in 1998, he turned to his life-long love of writing and editing; this became his third career, and he continued to be nationally recognized as a distinguished writer and speaker. He was the author of 8 published books and more than 200 published professional publications. In this third career, he also served as a columnist for three professional publications, writing about pediatrics and medical communication. He also edited two professional newsletters. While he was proud of his professional and personal achievements, he prided himself most for his great family, for his many "firsts" in his profession, for his reputation for honesty and integrity, and for his intense love for children.
