Anne Baker Cravens
1918-2018
Anne Baker Cravens (Mrs. Rutherford Rector Cravens II), died at home on Thursday, the 21st of June 2018. She was born on the 20th of November 1918, in Philadelphia PA, but came to Texas as soon as she could. She attended The Kinkaid School and graduated from the University of Texas where she served as President of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. After her graduation in 1939, she and a group of friends sailed to Europe for a tour of the continent. On the 1st of September, they set sail for home on the British ship, the SS Athenia. On the night of September 3, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by the German U Boat, U-30. Anne and her traveling companions survived a harrowing night in a lifeboat and were finally rescued by a passing freighter
On Christmas Eve 1942, she wed her beloved Ruddy, thus beginning 74 years of loving marriage. Anne and Ruddy were founding members of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, where Anne served as President of the ECW. She was a member of The Junior League of Houston, Terpsichore, The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and, with her husband, The Bastrop Marching and Chowder Society, The Forest Club, The Houston Country Club and the Winedale Historical Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Burke and Bennie Baker, her sister, Cary Cadman, her brothers, Burke Baker, Robert Henry Baker, and her grandson, Rutherford Cravens, IV.
Survivors include her four children, Cary Cravens Doggett, Rutherford R. Cravens III and wife, Jane, Anne Cravens Bartley, Ben Baker Cravens and wife, Susan; eight grandchildren, Thomas Doggett Jr., Cravens Doggett, Ben Cravens Jr., William Cravens, Sarahjane Cravens, Rutherford Bartley, Margaret Bartley and Charles Bartley; great-grandchildren, Burke, Claire, Wyatt, Priscilla, Cameron, and Preston: and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to housekeeper, Dora Guerrero, and caregivers, Rita Ricard, Shay Berry, Juanita Watson and Janelle Austin for their care and support. And special thanks to Snezana Ortega and Marisol Bradford.
A memorial service is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 19th of July, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the adjacent Bagby Parish Hall.
