BY Andre B. , age 63, "slipped the surly bonds of earth" in search of thermal pockets on July 3, 2018. A lifelong model airplane enthusiast and aerospace engineer, sports car enthusiast and mechanical engineer, accomplished skier and music lover - whose skills on the guitar and harmonica can only be described as fearless and unbelievably loud; was a brilliant and unique talent, who will truly be missed. Andre was an innovator and visionary who founded Automation Engineering, Inc., on the courage of his dreams for the design and implementation of precision opto-electronics and photonics manufacturing equipment, and his desire to make a difference for the better in the world. He served as president and Chief Technology Officer from 1990- 2014 when he left to found By Design, his last visionary venture. Those who were touched by his kindness and generosity, inspired by his teaching and mentoring or simply privileged to have worked with him or called him friend, were blessed by the opportunities provided by his presence in our lives. An accomplished engineer with over 40 years of experience, Andre held bachelor's degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan (earned simultaneously), and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He authored and co- authored several publications and held several US patents. He is survived by his brother Richard By and sister-in-law Sue By, his sister Carol Thompson, girlfriend Robyn Lee Tsouros-Matteson, numerous nieces and nephews and many loving friends.
