BOND CAROLYN STETSON BOND Alice Carolyn Stetson Bond passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Knollwood Retirement Community in Washington, DC. Loving wife of John Buchanan Bond for almost 75 years, who preceded her in death in February. Beloved mother of John Jr. (Sharon), David (Faith) and Richard (Michele), and proud grandfather of Andrew (Shaylan), Elizabeth, Alexandra and Lauren. She was born on the family farm in Neponset, IL (population 500) on March 1, 1920 to Ezra Robinson and Lottie Steele Stetson. She had a happy childhood with five siblings - gathering at the dinner table daily. Her love of flowers began with wandering in the woods searching for the first wildflowers each year. She rode horseback at will on country roads, gathered nuts in feed sacks, sledded on hills and skied on wooden skis. She was a bright and talented student, attending the University of Illinois where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1942 with a degree in English and honored on a bronze tablet in the Main Library. It was here where she met her future husband John in botany class. Stories remain unclear as to who carried whom through the course. After this connection, her dance cards were always filled by John, and she was with him the rest of their days. As John attended West Point, Carolyn was Head of Lower School at the Knox School in Cooperstown, NY. They were married on June 6, 1943, and separated for their first anniversary while John awaited movement to France. During the war she began her life of volunteer service, working with the Red Cross. Reunited on June 5, 1945, they began a life of moving through 40 addresses. She always planted flowers and hung curtains upon moving in, regardless of how long they might stay, to make each a home for her family. At every station she shared her organizational talents as a tireless volunteer in officers' wives clubs, garden clubs, vocal groups and churches. Committed to helping others advance their knowledge, she tutored students and served as a substitute teacher many times in her life. After John retired from the Army in 1968, they moved to Acton, MA, where she combined her many loves by volunteering in garden therapy and at the Concord Antiquarian Society. Carolyn and John moved to the warmth of Winter Park, FL in 1982, where she continued her love of family and travel, and her passion for volunteer service in both garden therapy and as a docent at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, for which she received many accolades. They relocated to Knollwood in 2004, enjoying family and fellowship together for the past 14 years, where her formidable wisdom and strength shone as a wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Carolyn was an avid reader, blessed with insatiable curiosity, a willingness to share her knowledge with the people around her, and a friend to many in the gardens, around the pool, at zumba, the bridge table, and in the dining room. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. As a final act of service, she continues advancing the training of future Military caregivers at the Anatomical Gift Program of the Uniformed Services University at Walter Reed, our Nation's only military medical school. Carolyn will be laid to rest with John, in a full military honor ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on August 22, 2018.
