Doris Conrad Flanders centenarian: 'she was awesome' Doris Florence (Knecht) Conrad of Flanders, N.J., passed away peacefully at home on June 21, 2018. She was 101. The daughter of the late William and Sadie (Lincoln) Knecht, Doris was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, on Jan. 5, 1917. She married Perry "Connie" Conrad on June 1, 1947. They settled in Queens, N.Y., where they raised four children before retiring to Fort Myers, Fla., until Connie's passing in 1986. Doris loved people. Her front door, which never had a lock, was literally always open. Friends and family appeared in her kitchen unannounced and always welcome. She spent hours crocheting, sewing and searching for her glasses, which she usually found on top of her head. Over the years, she cared for her parents, aunt, children, grandchildren and countless pets. She loved and was loved. Her children never stopped calling her "Mommy." Doris was quick to laugh and did so loudly. She joked about her frequent trips to Atlantic City to "gamble away her children's inheritance" and she took joy in gloating over gambling winnings, her bowling average, or how great she looked for her age. She loved to travel and hated to miss anything. She remained healthy and active until the age of 99. She was a lot of fun. For the last quarter of her life, Doris lived with her daughter Audrey and son-in-law Chuck. For the past two years, Audrey was a devoted and selfless caretaker for Doris and lovingly ensured her comfort, right up until her passing. In addition to her husband, Doris was predeceased by two brothers, William and Warren Knecht, and her beloved son, William "Billy" Conrad. She lives on through her children: David Conrad and wife Lynne of Denver, N.C.; Diane Milligan Borzym and husband Eugene of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; Audrey Moehringer and husband Chuck of Flanders, N.J.; and daughter-in-law Angela Conrad of Howard Beach, N.Y.; grandchildren: David Conrad and wife HongRan; Christine Milligan Mulvehill and husband John; Benjamin Conrad and girlfriend Natalie; Barbara Kate Mills and husband Ryan; Paul Moehringer and wife Jocelyn; and great-grandchildren: Matthew and Tess Conrad, Carolyn Rapp, Samuel Mills, and Caroline and Daniel Mulvehill. A celebration of Doris' life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to honor her memory are simply encouraged to enjoy life, just as she did. Lastly, Doris would want you to know that she bowled a 220 at age 92. Top that.
