Anne Smith Janes
1934-2018
Anne Royston Smith Janes passed away peacefully on June 13, 2018, at home with her family. Born outside of Baltimore in Sweet Air, Maryland, Anne was the daughter of Milton R. and Alice Layman Smith. She graduated from Bucknell University in 1956 with a B.A. in Music Education, meeting her husband, Edwin Janes, there along the way. Anne & Ed recently celebrated 61 years of marriage. Anne taught music at a number of schools before focusing full-time on creating a rich home life for her three daughters and becoming active in the New Jersey, Dallas, and Houston communities where the family lived.
Anne's love of and talent for music developed early and continued throughout her life. She gave generously of herself as a volunteer for her entire life, serving Meals on Wheels, teaching ESL, and volunteering with CCSC. She treasured opportunities to travel—especially sharing trips with Ed later in life—and had a special fondness for time spent with family at Galveston Beach and Bethany Beach (DE). Anne is remembered by all who knew her as someone who embodied grace and cared deeply about people, an excellent listener who was always aware of what mattered to others: celebrating their accomplishments and special occasions, supporting them through challenges.
Anne was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Betty Smith Green. She is survived by her husband Edwin Janes, her daughters and their families, and brother Milton R. Smith, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Anne will be held on Saturday, June 23, at 11 a.m. at ChristChurch Presbyterian, 5001 Bellaire Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a charity of your choosing.
