Anastis Garo WWII veteran, successful restaurant owner, loving husband, father, grandfather Anastis 'Ernie' Garo, 97, passed away on May 2, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was one of five, sisters Estelle and Theodora, and brothers Lefty and Lazar. Born on April 9, 1921 in Jersey City, N.J., to Steve and Barbara Garo, he was a 1938 graduate of Snyder High School. He served in World War II as a corporal in Europe in the anti-aircraft group and returned home in 1945. Ernie became a restaurant owner, owning several different restaurants over his 40-year career. He lived in Clark, N.J., from 1956 to the present day with his wife 0f 62 years, Loretta, and son William. He was a founding member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Westfield, N.J. He is survived by his wife Loretta, son William, daughter-in-law Helen, and grandchildren Alexis and Michael. He is survived by his many nieces and nephews that he cherished. Ernie was known for his joy of life, making people laugh, and caring for family and friends. Memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 250 Gallows Hills Road, Westfield, N.J., on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his memory to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
