ALEXANDER AMELIA J. ALEXANDER "Melie" On April 20, 2018, at Virginia Hospital Center, at the age of 80, of heart failure. Beloved wife for 56 years of F. Lynn Alexander; older sister of Willa Ann Johnson (Herndon, VA); mother of daughter, Jenny Alexander (Chicago, IL), daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Shaun Fanning (Washington, DC.), daughter and son-in-law, Carrie Alexander and Fred Gerber (Washington, DC.), and son, Roger Alexander (Durham, NC). She was pre-deceased by her parents, Roger E. and Louise T. Johnson, her older brother, Johnathan E. Johnson and her second child, Polly Peery Alexander, who died in infancy. Melie was the cherished grandmother of Ruby, Mica, Shepherd, Everett, and Simone. Born in Whittier, California, Melie moved with her family to Washington, DC. at the age of four. There she was educated through high school in Northwest D.C. and except for college, and a few years as a newlywed in Gulfport, Mississippi, she remained a Washingtonian. Melie and Lynn moved to Northern Virginia with their young family and lived there happily for the rest of her life. After attending Cornell University, Melie worked for the Republican National Committee and other national Republican organizations. She was a Cherry Blossom Princess for the State of California in the mid 1950's. Upon the birth of her first child, Melie transitioned to the full-time jobs of mother and homemaker. She dedicated herself to her family, particularly the education, activities, growth, and development of her children. She served as a Teacher's Aide in all her children's elementary school classes and was often a parent escort on field trips. As a member of St. John's Episcopal church in McLean for many years, she was a leader of their Red Cross blood drives. Melie loved baking, cake decorating, and picture framing. She and her family were lifelong members of Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD. Everyone who met Melie was enchanted by her. She emanated kindness, compassion, generosity, and hospitality with an engaging smile and infectious laugh that stood out in any crowd. The immediate family will gather for a private service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Virginia Hospital Center Foundation (www.virginiahospitalcenter.com/supportthehospital/donate_online.aspx).
