Col. Richard Ward Dixon passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 23, 2018 in Rockwall, TX. Born on April 15, 1944 in South Bend, Indiana. Col. Dixon was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife Vivienne, whom he was married to for 35 years. He is survived by his children Andrew Dixon and Sobia Dixon of Marina Del Rey, CA; Katherine Harron and Andrew Harron of Rockwall, TX; his sisters Carolyn and Buster Smith of London, KY, Bonnie Stewart of Fort Wayne, IN, Cathy and Eddie Willis of London, KY, Beth and Carol Dixon of Nashville, TN and their families; Rick and Marci Everson of Anchorage, AK, Bob Everson of Cincinnati, OH and their families; Major General Thomas Needham of Exeter, NH; Sargent Major Raymond and Barbara Moran of Fort Meade, MD; and his faithful feline companion Jackson Dixon.
After graduating from Indiana University, Richard Dixon enlisted in the US Army and proudly served our country for over 27 years, including two tours in Vietnam, and was awarded two Silver Stars for heroism and the Legion of Merit. His final command was as the Deputy Chief of Staff for the Pacific Command in Honolulu, HI. Upon retiring from the military as a Colonel, Richard found a love for teaching and dedicated his life to the benefit of his students at Cypress Creek High School where he taught Sociology, US History, Government, Psychology, and Economics. Col. Dixon loved his students like his own children and his most proud teaching moments were serving as a senior advisor for the school prom and graduation.
Col. Dixon was a voracious quilter and spent most of his free time quilting alongside his friends at the Tri-County and Rockwall Quilt guilds. He shared this passion with his wife Vivienne prior to her passing and exhibited his works several times at various quilt conventions. Col. Dixon loved baseball and had a passion for regularly watching games featuring his former students. His soul was Kentucky through and through as he loved visiting his sisters and on summer days fishing at their pond under the shade of a tree surrounded by family. Col. Dixon and his wife Vivienne were active members of Prince of Peace parish and served in the Catholic community.
Col. Dixon's impact and legacy will live on in those who were honored to know him, and his loved ones are comforted with the fact that he is reunited and will forever be at rest with the love of his life Vivienne. Funeral services with be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Community on Tomball Parkway in the Mary Chapel on April 21st, 2018 at 10:30 am. Col. Dixon will be laid to rest alongside his beloved Vivienne at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC with full military honors.
