Alyce "Dede" DaltonAugust 26, 1918 - February 23, 2018Alyce "Dede" Dalton preceded in death by her loving husband, Jim Dalton, mother of Jim III (Jeannine), Diana Exline (Chris-dec.), Laurie Stark (Steve), Susan Wilkinson (Dave) and her favorite "child", Tooker, her beloved cat. She was a caring grandmother of Michelle (Heath), Nicole (Bryce), Matthew (Angela), Nathan (Melissa), Alyssa (Brandon), Nicholas (Kelly), Joe (Emma), Beth (Kevin), Maureen, Tim (Katie) and Eric, and great-grandmother of Colin, Mikayla, Jack, Grace, Sophia, Henry, Evie, Jimmy, Hailey, Danny, Simon, Dylan, Chloe, Callum, Mia, Liam and Christopher, died at her home on February 23rd after 99½ wonderful years of living in San Rafael.

Born on August 26, 1918, Dede was born on 2nd Street to George and Frances Soldavini. She was the youngest of two, having a sister, Ethel Koenig (dec.). She went to grammar school at E Street School and graduated from San Rafael High School in 1936. She went on to Marin Junior College and later, began working in San Francisco for Pacific Telephone &Telegraph as a comptometrist. She would take the train from B Street in San Rafael, caught the ferry in Sausalito to the Ferry Building in San Francisco and walked to work on New Montgomery.

She transferred with PT&T to the corner of 4th and H Street in San Rafael. It was while working there in 1942, that she saw Jim's cavalry unit from the 74th Field Battalion ride by on horseback from Pt. Reyes where he was protecting the coastline. At a USO dance, Dede met and danced with Jim for the first time; she always said, "Your Dad could really dance". While he was stationed in Tyler, Texas, Dede took a train to join him and they were married in 1944.

As part of the "greatest generation", Dede instilled in her family the importance of giving back to our community. She led by example with all of the volunteering she did throughout her life continuing well into her nineties. When Jimmy and Diana started at St Raphael's, she joined the women's guild helping with bake sales and hot dog days. Dede and Jim and other parishioner's tireless help brought Blessed Sacrament Church in Santa Venetia from a one-room church to a thriving parish with a school. When Laurie and Susan started at Blessed Sacrament, she continued baking cupcakes that were always the first to go…she was a baker extraordinaire and was renown for her brownies and kuchen. The neighborhood kids benefitted from this with her special Easter baskets and holiday treats. She volunteered for many years at the Marin General Thrift Store and continued volunteering for Marin General by baking "goodies" for their monthly sales. Dede's creative side flourished as she worked for Blessed Sacrament and Nazareth House's Christmas bazaars. All of her grandkids love the uniquely decorated trees she created just for them. Dede would always say when she saw beautiful scenery, "Oh, I wish I could paint". Later in life, she discovered she could and we agree.

Dede liked to keep active and enjoyed playing tennis. Her love of tennis started early in her life where she played at Boyd Park and continued playing into her eighties. She had many wonderful times playing with her tennis group…she loved the parties, the tournaments and their friendships. She also bowled in a league for many years with some of those same friends.

Dede loved gathering family and friends together and cooking great meals especially for Easter, Fourth of July, but especially up at Lake Tahoe. Our family tradition of vacationing at Camp Richardson's began in 1960 and will continue. Because Tahoe has been such an important part of family, we had a bench built with a view of the lake to honor our Mom and Dad. Mom loved spending time at their bench.

Please join Dede's family for a Celebration of Life Mass on Saturday, March 3rd at 11:00 a.m. at St. Sebastian's Church, 373 Bon Air Road, Greenbrae.

Dede's family would like to thank her devoted and loving caregivers, Katherine, Mariana and Marica and Heartland Hospice Care and requests that donations are made to the SF - Marin Food Bank or Marin Friends of Ferals, PO Box 6282, San Rafael 94903.
