Dr. Allen B. Rosenstein, Professor of Systems Engineering Emeritus at UCLA, died quietly in his sleep last week at his home at the age of 97. In addition to his nearly 4-decade career at UCLA, he was an entrepreneur, inventor, veteran, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. With 5 patents to his name, he launched an electronics manufacturing company based in Santa Monica that recently sold after more than 50 years of operation. He remained active in its operations into his nineties. In parallel to his dual careers in education and business, he was deeply motivated to address national concerns pertaining to the economy and trends in US-based manufacturing. He took an active role as a public servant to educate the federal government on policies to protect and retain our engineering resources which led to his participation in Presidential Committees and Conferences under Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. This effort resulted in bills introduced in Congress receiving bipartisan support. Rosenstein received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Arizona, College of Engineering, and the Fellow Award by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He is survived by his wife Betty, three children, seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and many others whose lives he touched.
