1923 ~ 2018
Venice Jacob Fugal of Pleasant Grove, Utah, left this existence frail in body but strong in mind and spirit on February 18, 2018. Born at her home in Provo to one of Utah's first large-scale sheep ranchers, Isaac and Thea Jacob, she was the youngest and last survivor of seven children: Gladys Burdett, Eldon, Wendell, Milton, Calvin and Norton Jacob. She had a carefree childhood spending summers in the mountains and feeling secure in the little sheep wagon when the coyotes howled. Her first 17 years were spent living in a beautiful home on "Temple Hill" covering a city block that was later sold by her father to BYU, located on the southwest corner of the lower campus at Provo, Utah.
She was a senior at Provo High School when the family moved to Pleasant Grove. She attended BYU and worked in the business office of Geneva Steel and met her lifetime love and eternal companion, Boyd LeRoy Fugal. She traveled by train with Boyd's parents to Florida where he received his Navy Wings of Gold. They were married in Sanford, Florida on March 15, 1944 after a 2-year courtship by mail. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple a month later, April 20, 1944.
Venice served faithfully in various callings in the Young Women and Relief Society organizations and Drama Director. She enjoyed civic responsibilities including the Utah Valley Opera Guild, PTA Scholarship Council, American Legion Auxiliary President, and Daughter of Utah Pioneers for over 60 years. She appreciated good music and sang in a triple trio, "The Maniloettes". She and Boyd served a two-year mission in New York City as Directors of the Visitors Center for the . They were recognized as Utah Valley Family of the Year, 1978.
Her main focus was her family, immediate and extended. She loved the responsibility of motherhood and caring for others in need. Exemplifying a life of service and prayer, her home was filled with stability, love and peace. She inherited her mother's green thumb with a marvelous rose garden. Her homemaking skills were impeccable and she had a knack for writing and teaching others. Most importantly was the permanent structure of faith she had for the Lord, nurturing the lambs entrusted to her through constant devotion.
Venice leaves a legacy of 9 children: Connie (Steve) Hunter, Annette Erickson, Daniel Boyd (Jill) Fugal, Kathleen (Bruce) Burtenshaw, Guy Leroy (Paula) Fugal, Viola (Gale) Gilbert, Celeste (Scott) Grossman, Niels Isaac (Tana) Fugal, Patricia (Gregg) Smith, 39 grandchildren and 104 great-grandchildren. She is reunited with her beloved husband and sons-in-law Stephen Paul, Mel Erickson and granddaughter Michelle Paul (Jim) Hall.
Her life will be honored on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the Pleasant Grove Northfield Stake Center, 105 West 1800 North, Pleasant Grove. Family and friends may greet the family prior to the service from 9:00-10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery under the direction of Olpin Family Mortuary, Pleasant Grove.
