Gene Silver
1928-2018
Gene Silver passed away on February 14, 2018, age 89. He was born August 14, 1928 in Harlingen, TX. He attended Harlingen High School where he excelled in all sports. He graduated in 1948 and was the first in his family to attend college. Gene was accepted by Rice Institute, now Rice University and hitchhiked to Houston in 1948 with his worldly possessions in a cardboard suitcase. He graduated from Rice in 1953. While at Rice, Gene, at 150 lbs., played on the varsity football team at left defensive cornerback. He was on the '49 team that defeated North Carolina in the 1950 Cotton Bowl.
Gene had the great fortune to marry two loving wives. His first wife, Nance Hargrave, and Gene married in July 1951 and spent 35 loving, fun years together before cancer took her life in 1986. They had three wonderful children, daughter Terri Gene Silver Morgan, son Gary "Spike" Silver, and deceased daughter Amy Carol Silver Riley.
In February 1989, Gene met and was captivated by Camille Knight Henry. Ten months later they married, and he not only got Camille but also two sweet step-daughters, Carolyn and Jennifer Henry. Camille and Gene's union of 28 years produced happiness and great love, along with the tragedies of losing two daughters.
Gene's business career began in a family restaurant in Harlingen, and moved to insurance adjusting in Texas and New Mexico. Gene then spent 25 years with two great friends, Richard Adkins and Leroy Schneider, in the commercial mortgage banking and real estate appraisal business.
Gene was a fast pitch softball pitcher. He pitched until he was 60 years old and then gave it up for golf and memories. In 1991, Gene was elected to the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame, one of his proudest honors.
Gene is survived by his wife Camille Silver, daughter Terri and husband, Rev. Ralph Morgan of Lufkin, TX, son Spike Silver of Los Angeles, CA, and step-daughter Carolyn and husband Mark Abernathy of Austin, TX, as well as special niece Linda Carter. He left a legacy in his six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Gene is also survived by a host of life-long friends. It is appropriate he died on Valentine's Day, as he was a man who gave much love to his family and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Gene's remarkable life will be held on Monday, February 26, 2018, 2:00 pm, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd. Houston, TX 77030-4123, or to The Hope and Healing Institute of St. Martin's Episcopal Church.
