Alexander A. Sniatkowski Passaic police detective captain; baseball standout and coach; services are Thursday Alexander A. Sniatkowski, of Ocean, N.J., passed away peacefully on Feb. 20, 2018. Services will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Ely Funeral Home, Neptune, N.J. A 1952 Passaic High School graduate, Alex served in the Army during the Korean War. Returning home, he married Maureen (Bracken). In 1962, he became a Passaic police officer, rising to detective captain before retiring in 1993. He was a standout baseball player, and his pitching skills earned him a tryout with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Alex was a devoted public servant and beloved baseball coach to hundreds of Passaic youth. He passed on to his family his passion for reading, baseball, and the N.Y. Yankees. Upon retirement, he and Maureen moved to Duck, N.C., where his storytelling and popularity earned him the nickname, "The Mayor." In 2010, he returned to New Jersey to spend more time with his family. Alex is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Maureen; sister, Judith and husband, David Cardella; brother, Richard and wife, Joanne, and sister-in-law, Ginny. He is also survived by his children, Brian, Mark and his wife, Geralyn; Jay and his wife, Elizabeth; Kerry and her husband, Matt Baldwin. He will be remembered for his keen sense of humor by his grandchildren: Alexandra, Alexander, Luke, Eliza, Mary, Owen, Adam, Milo, Elijah, Maize, and Henry, and his loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Alex and Julia, and brother, Robert and sister, Mary Ann.
