Sarah Pon Kiang January 22, 1922 - February 8, 2018Sarah Pon Kiang passed away in the presence of loved ones on February 8, 2018. Two brothers (Michael, Henry) and two sisters (May Young, Ann Chow) had predeceased her. She is survived by her husband Harry (103 years young) sons Donald (Wanda), Richard (Paula), grandson Harrison, granddaughter Katherine, brothers Don (Dorothy), Eugene (Amy), and sisters Mary Chang, Rose Wong, and Bernice (Bill) Kong.

Sarah was born and grew up in Detroit, Michigan where she excelled on the rifle team in high school. She then earned degrees in chemistry from the University of Detroit and Stanford University where she met her lifelong husband Harry. She began her working career at New York University assisting Dr. Jonas Salk in developing the polio vaccine in the early 1950's, then became a chemistry instructor at the City College of San Francisco and Eastern Illinois University when the family moved from San Francisco to Charleston, Illinois in 1958. Sarah finished her career as a part-time math teacher at Oaktown Community College (Chicago) and then worked as research chemist at Kraft Foods after they moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1965.

Sarah and her husband were one of the first to conduct university sponsored tours to mainland China in the early 1970's before then President Nixon and Chinese premier Chou En Lai opened the country up to visits by Americans. After retirement they spent much of their time with their grandchildren and visiting extended family members in California where Sarah liked to play the penny slots at Lake Tahoe.

Funeral services were held at Drake & Son Funeral Home on February 12, 2018 with internment at Rose Hill Cemetery in Chicago. Donations may be made to .
