Dr. Herbert A. KeithJan 26, 1925 - Jan 24, 2018Dr. Herbert Anthony Keith passed away peacefully on January 24th, 2018, just two days before his 93rd birthday. His passing came 22 years after his beloved wife Mary Lea Keith's passing. Together, Herb and Lea raised 8 children, enjoyed being grandparents to 15 grandchildren, and by the time of Herb's passing, 12 Great grandchildren. Lea would have been very proud of that.

Herb was born in St Joseph, Kentucky in 1925 to Anna Elizabeth Shoemaker Keith and Herbert Ansell Keith. He was the youngest of 5 children. The Keith family later moved to Evansville, Indiana where Herb attended Assumption Grammar School and later Memorial High School. In 1943 Herb was accepted into the V-12 program as a Navy Cadet at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. As an undergraduate, Herb was a competitive springboard and platform diver at Northwestern University, coached by his esteemed "Coach Peterson".

Herb went on to Graduate school at the University of Louisville College of Dentistry and Graduated on June 15, 1948, the same day he married his sweetheart Mary Lea Pike.

Herb then joined the Army Dental Corps and received an internship and residency in Oral Surgery at Brook General Hospital in San Antonio Texas. While helping his wife raise an ever-growing flock of kids, Herb served on several military bases including Texas, Colorado, Panama Canal Zone and Kentucky. He resigned the USA Army Dental Corps in 1954. Herb, Lea and four children settled in their home in San Lorenzo, California, started a new dental practice, and had the good sense to hatch four more children.

While stationed in Panama, Herb began flying in 1950 under the very casual tutelage of Dr. Prieta. Together on weekends, they would fly Dr. Prieta's Piper Cub to the San Blas Islands near the coast of Panama, to administer dentistry to the needy indigenous people.

After selling his dental practice in 1980, Herb enjoyed a productive retirement investing and developing real estate and successfully developed a new shopping center in the mid 1980's.

To the joy and amusement of his children, Herb had the most wonderful sense of recreation. Snow skiing, water skiing, dirt bike riding, scuba diving, river rafting, piloting, skydiving, hiking and traveling were all common family affairs that Herb enjoyed teaching and sharing with his children and grandchildren. But of all his outdoor interests, tennis was dearest to Herb's heart, where he was a charter member at the Bay-O-Vista Tennis Club in San Leandro for over 60 years. Around 1970, at about age 45, Herb won 1st place in the US Dental Tennis Association's Men's Open in Paris, France. After retirement, he competed professionally in the US Tennis Association and was ranked #2 in men's 60 and above in Northern California. Herb continued to play tennis regularly until two days before his stroke in 2015.

Herb succeeded his wife Lea, second child Deborah and fourth child Marc. Herb is succeeded by his children Mike Keith, Lynn Moore, Jeri Shahoian, Bonny Goselin, Chris Keith, Kathy Allara, and their extended families. Herb's love of life, family, and adventure will live on in all of us. He will truly be missed. A memorial mass will be held for Herb on March 1st at 10:00am at St. John's Catholic Church at 264 E. Lewelling Blvd. in San Lorenzo, followed by a reception at Herb's family home.
