Alvertus 'Ham' Jones Services are on Friday Alvertus "Ham" Jones, 96, made his transition on Feb. 8, 2018. A celebration of his life will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 149 Springfield Ave., Newark, N.J. Interment is in Glendale Cemetery, Bloomfield, N.J. Visitation is on Friday from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church. Arrangements are by Whigham Funeral Home. Born in Georgia, Alvertus was a resident of Newark. He was a retired supervisor at the Veterans Administration. Beloved husband of the late Grace Whittington Jones, he was the devoted father of Alvertus A. Jones (Nancy C. Jones); cherished grandfather of Vaughn (Florine Jones) and Corey Jones and Lori Ray; great-grandfather of Kyle, Collin and Cameron Jones and Aaden Ray; loving uncle of Pearl Simpson, Crystal Powell, Rhonda Jones, Ronald Jr. and Randy. He is also survived by a host of additional nieces, nephews and the great Philadelphia cousins.
