John Reid October 20, 1931 - January 9, 2018John Reid passed away in the presence of loved ones on January 9, 2018. Three brothers and a sister predeceased him. He is survived by his sister, Anne Marie Clifford, two generations of nieces and nephews, many cousins in Ireland and Faith, his love of 17 years.

John was born in San Francisco, attended St. James parochial school and Mission High, earned his Ph.D. in Literature at U.C. Santa Barbara and taught at universities in Japan, with the majority of his professorships being in Okinawa. He served in the army in Texas and lived and studied in France and Mexico. Proud of his Irish heritage and connection to family there, Ireland felt like a second home to him.

John was a hiker and backpacker and a Giants, 49ers and Warriors fan. He loved home cooked meals, eating at diverse restaurants and always enjoyed a martini and good wine. Poetry, literature, music, travel and long walks in Golden Gate Park were an integral part of his life. His family and friends were paramount.

John led a long, full life. He was a dedicated teacher who himself never stopped learning. He was a man of integrity who treated others with dignity. He meant much to many and they will not forget him. He will be remembered with respect, affection and love. He will be missed.

Mass will be celebrated at 9 am on Saturday, March 10th at Saints Peter and Paul, Washington Square, San Francisco. Memorial gifts in John's name may be sent to The Mechanic's Institute Library, 57 Post Street, San Francisco 94104.
