February 13, 1931 - January 27, 2018 Alan Gottschalk, Recording Engineer to the Stars, past, and even to this present day, passed away from congestive heart failure late in the evening of January 27th, 2018. Born in Los Angeles, Calif, Alan went to Beverly Hills High School, excelling as a Trumpet player in the high schools marching band; He graduated from Beverly High in 1949. Alan went on to UCLA where he was was also a trumpet player in the UCLA marching band, often performing at the famed Hollywood Bowl--A highlight for him always. In addition, Alan was a distinguished member of Tau Delta Phi Fraternity--Working part time at Electro-Vox, while still in school, Alan graduated UCLA in 1953; Soon after, Alan began working full time at the studio where he also met his future wife, Joan Rothstein, whom he married in September of 1957. Alan worked very closely with his Father and esteemed founder of Electro-Vox Recording Studios, Bert Gottschalk. Alan had an amazing feel and understanding for sound editing and specialized in working with sound on tape, with a unique "niche" in reel to reel recordings. In the early 1960's, Alan excelled enough in his craft, and soon earned the title of Co-Owner of Electro-Vox, still working side by side with his Father, until his Fathers passing in 1967. As President and Owner of Electro-Vox, Alan worked with many of the "A Lister's" of their day...The likes of Sammy Fain, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Burns & Allen, Dinah Shore, Eddie Cantor, Jerry Lewis, Frank Sinatra, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Henry Mancini, Burt Bachrach and Michael Feinstein were all a part of the studios success and growth during this time. Working directly with and side with Jack and Bob Hope (USO shows) were amongst the many highlights of his life. It wasn't all work with Alan. Sailing in Marina Del Rey in the 60's and 70's with his son David and being anywhere near the Ocean was always something he appreciated. Traveling with his wife Joan, along with his children throughout California, including very memorable trips to Lake Arrowhead, Coronado Island, Newport Beach, Carmel/Monterrey, to name a "few", usually by car, and on long week-ends, was something that made him appreciate our beautiful state and live life to the fullest. Long walks with friends and with his dogs by his side over the years, involvement with his Brandeis Mens Group, involvement with networking groups such as Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters and just hanging out with many of his college friends, even until very recently, was always very special to him. Fast forward to a very well respected and fulfilling career, Alan retired from full time work at the studio in 2000; The studio closed after being in business for 69 years at the same location, Melrose and Gower, in Hollywood. Even in retirement, Alan continued to do recordings and consulting, part time, for those whom needed the classic touch of a true pro. Alan is predeceased by daughter Lisa, and sister Ruth; He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Joan, his son David, daughter-law, Kathy, Step Grandchildren, Brooke and Brianna.
