1934 - 2018 Alice Minden Buckley, proud daughter of Oklahoma, widow of a wonderful man, amazing mother of four, awesome Nana of seven, artist, mentor, Catholic, Christian, friend, neighbor, beloved and loving, kind, curious, and thoughtful, passed away on January 7 early in the morning due to complications from the flu. Her family was in her heart and she in theirs, as was always true. It was a sudden end to a wonderful life. Alice was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, in 1934 and grew up in a large family with seven siblings, the children of John and Ann Minden. Her lifelong love of making art began when she attended the Kansas City Art Institute. Among her adventures in these days was a six-week trip to Europe in 1956 that was so forward-thinking of her that it made the front page of the hometown paper. She moved to New York City in 1958 and worked in advertising. In 1960, she volunteered for the presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy, where she met a young New York attorney and fellow volunteer named James Buckley. After she turned down his marriage proposal on their first date, they began a memorable courtship that culminated in their marriage in 1961. On their wedding day, the couple received a telegram of congratulations from the White House and President Kennedy. While living in Washington, D.C., Alice and Jim had two sons, James and Thomas. After the family moved to Pittsburgh, they welcomed their first daughter, Alicia. In New Jersey, Jim and Alice had Annie and the family was complete. After moving to Los Angeles in 1975, Alice began an award-winning career in real estate sales while making many new friends in business. She enjoyed traveling with Jim, especially to Europe, and reveling in her children's lives. Throughout her life, Alice was a dedicated volunteer and community member. After retiring, she taught art at Dolores Mission Alternative School in Boyle Heights, helping young people express themselves and gain courage and hope through art. Soon after, she became a volunteer with Catholic Detention Ministry at Eastlake Juvenile Hall, where she visited with incarcerated youth weekly for more than 15 years. She found a community and calling in this work, regularly going above and beyond to send cards and letters to those transferred to prison, attend court dates, and start an art class at the facility. She had the wisdom to listen and encourage and remained a dedicated volunteer up to the time of her death. Alice also created her own art and relished learning new things. She took up printmaking, collage, and photography, and loved reading great books. She found great joy in seeing her grandkids grow. Along with a lifelong message of love, hope, and service to others, Alice leaves behind friends new and old and a large and loving family: Annie Buckley and Dane Picard; Alicia and Rusty Schoenherr; Tom and Jennifer Buckley; and Jim Buckley and Patty Kelley. Her grandchildren are Charlie, James, and Elizabeth Schoenherr; Siena and Dalton Buckley; and Conor and Katie Buckley. Alice's siblings are Mike Minden, Larry Minden, Linda Armantrout, Cecilia Minden-Cupp, and Mary Minden-Zins. She joins her husband Jim and her brothers John and Patrick in heaven. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Brendan's Church on Friday, January 19 at 11:00 a.m. To support a cause that Alice loved, donations are suggested to Homeboy Industries.
