AL S. CARRAWAY  
God called Al S. Carraway of Ashburn, VA home on December 6, 2017. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Doris. He and Doris shared 64 wonderful years together. They traveled extensively with church friends during his retirement. Al grew up in North Carolina, one of eight children. He served in the Air Force for four years at bases in Texas where he trained to be a fire fighter. He was a fire fighter at the air base in Kinston, North Carolina after leaving the Air Force. He joined the Arlington County Fire Department in 1957 and served there for 26 years. He also was a painting contractor for 42 years. He happily served Graham Road Methodist Church in many capacities including painting it inside and outside, from the tip of the steeple on down. He loved bluegrass music, reading, and westerns in any form. To his family he was known as "Papa" Nothing made him happier than to be surrounded by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to share stories that he said at least had a small grain of truth. He was Mr. Dependable for family, friends and his church. Al loved talking to people and was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He was a great role model of his faith for all those that knew him. He is survived by his brother Lowell, his children Alan and wife Angela, Glenn and wife Becky, Connie and husband Cliff, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.  Funeral Service, 2 p.m., Saturday, December 16 at the Graham Road United Methodist Church, 2929 Graham Rd., Falls Church, where the family will be receiving friends 1 p.m. until service. Interment following at National Memorial Cemetery. Donations may be directed to Capital Caring, 2900 Telestar Ct., Falls Church, VA 22042 or the .The Murphy Funeral Home - Falls Church entrusted with arrangements.
