Ann Alway FrenchOctober 9, 1929 - November 28, 2017Ann French died peacefully in her sleep on November 28th after a short illness.

Born in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Maud and James Douglas Alway, Ann grew up flanked by brothers Jim and Tom and surrounded by a large extended family, spending summers at lake houses and winters playing cards and staying warm. Ann attended Stephens College in Missouri and then honed her secretarial skills at the Katharine Gibbs School in New York. After college she moved to Paris with the family of a Stephens classmate where she worked for the Marshall Plan, a source of pride her entire life. When her mother died tragically in an airplane crash in 1951, Ann returned home to take care of her father and younger brother Tom. Feeling stifled by life in small-town South Dakota, Ann decided to move to the American city recommended highly by Parisians: San Francisco. In 1952, with her father's blessing, she and her cousin Catherine drove west and moved into a house in the Sunset District with several other young working women. Ann was running the gift shop at UCSF Medical Center when she met the love of her life, attorney James French. Jim was an avid sailor and Ann took to the sport readily.  Soon after they married in 1955, the two sailed to Hawaii with another couple. She was a proud member for decades of The Sea Gals, a pioneering women's sailing group.

Ann became a full-time homemaker and mother to daughters Martha and Molly. She was known for cultivating a wide range of glorious dahlias and volunteered at the Dahlia Dell in Golden Gate Park. A gifted seamstress, she made beautiful clothing for herself, her daughters and granddaughter.

Raised in a Republican family, Ann became a lifelong liberal Democrat during the Vietnam War and the presidency of Richard Nixon. She was a long-standing supporter of Emily's List and many other progressive organizations. In her free time she volunteered as a counselor at Planned Parenthood and championed it throughout her life. A loving and fiercely devoted matriarch with a keen sense of humor, she spoke her truth, damn the consequences.

Ann is survived by daughters Martha French (Anthony Fusco) and Molly French, step-daughter Gay French-Ottaviani (Lorenzo Ottaviani), grandchildren Katherine and James Fusco, nieces Amanda Nolen, Lisa French, Barbara French, and nephews Mark Alway and Gregory Alway.

A private memorial will be held on January 13; contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood.
