March 8, 1914 - November 26, 2017 Ada Mayer, 103, died peacefully on November 26, 2017. Kind and generous, Ada was devoted to her family, friends, and neighbors. She sought out opportunities to help others - from providing for the education of her children and grandchildren, to assisting young women to obtain scholarships for college, to encouraging her friends to pursue lifelong learning with her. She was recognized for her accomplishments in a Los Angeles City resolution on the occasion of her 90th birthday. She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on March 8, 1914, and moved to Los Angeles when she was 15. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights, received her Bachelor or Arts degree from UCLA and received her Master of Arts degree in social welfare from UC Berkeley. She worked as a social worker for Vista del Mar and as a teacher and pupil services and attendance counselor with LAUSD, retiring in 1979. She married Harold Mayer in 1942 and enjoyed 45 years of marriage with Harold until his death in 1987. She was an active volunteer with Valley University Women, serving as its President for a term, as well as with the Jewish Family Service Valley storefront until into her 90s. She stated that her legacy was her children, Steven of Burbank and, Richard and Loretta Mayer, both of Los Angeles, who survive her. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. At her request, the family will have a private gathering. Donations in her memory may be made to Jewish Family Services of Los Angeles or to Temple Israel of Hollywood.
