Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Akiko Hirose Jennings, passed away on October 23, 2017 at the age of 90 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 22, 1927 in Sapporo, Japan, the daughter of Hajime Hirose and Harue Tamura Hirose. In Sapporo, she was employed by the U.S. Department of Foreign Affairs. She also worked as a translator at the U.S. Military Base Hospital where she met and later married Glade George Jennings on March 15, 1952. At the end of his military service, they returned to Utah. She remained close to her Japanese heritage and community. She was employed at the Mikado and Kyoto restaurants for many years. She enjoyed traveling, camping and socializing with family and friends. She always had fun going to Wendover. She was a member of the LDS Church.
Akiko is survived by her children Alice Jennings, Susann Valdez, Eddie (Teri) Jennings, and Glenn (Jenny) Jennings (all of Salt Lake City), 4 grandsons, 6 granddaughters, 14 great-grandchildren and her sister Noriko Hirose (Sapporo, Japan). She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Cheryl Ann, her son-in-law Anthony Valdez, and her brothers Eiji and Tetsuo Hirose.
We would like to thank the Trauma Unit at IHC Hospital for the care of our mother.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 30, 2017 at 11:00 am at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway (10600 South), South Jordan, Utah. Viewings will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2017 from 5:00-7:00 pm and on Monday from 10:00-10:45 am at the funeral home. Interment at Murray City Cemetery.
