David Lorrin Ellis
4/16/1935 ~ 4/11/2018
David Lorrin Ellis, 82, a kind man, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on April 11, 2018, surrounded by his loving family, two days after a fall. He was the seventh son born to Charles William Ellis and Mary Oliva Shilton on April 16, 1935 in the small mountain farming community of Mancos, Colorado, where his grandparents had been sent by the LDS Church to colonize the area. He loved his rural upbringing where family, town, and church were one large extended group.
David interrupted his studies at BYU to work digging the road tunnel to Mesa Verde National Park to earn money to pay for his LDS mission to the Gulf States. After returning to BYU, he graduated in accounting in June of 1960 and became a CPA. While working in Salt Lake, he met and married his sweetheart Mary Ellen White in the Salt Lake Temple on November 17, 1961. They were married for 50 years before her passing in 2011. They were blessed with six of their own children: Steve-(since deceased), Douglas (Ruth), Cheryl (Dewey), Michelle (Leda), Diane (Steve,) and Denise (Steve). They had 25 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, with three on the way. David and Mary also adopted three children: Barbara (deceased), Jason and Dennis (who returned to their birth mother).
Their home was a sanctuary for many who needed a place to stay over the years. He was always active in the LDS church and served in many church callings, including ward clerk and youth advisor. He served for years as the Stake Athletic Director refereeing hundreds of softball and basketball games. Dave and Mary loved traveling together and went on many trips and cruises. They also served a one-year mission to the St. George Family History Center in 2001-02.
Dave loved all sports, particularly BYU sports, pitching softball, and spent years coaching his children's baseball and softball teams. One beloved family tradition was the decades of deer hunts at Soldier Summit. Family camping was the focus and hunting less so because if you got an animal, camp was over and the work began.
Professionally, David left the desk job life of accounting early on and became a businessman. He owned Save Way Trailer Sales and C. H. Spencer & Company, both in Salt Lake. He worked six days a week for decades to keep them running, doing the company's books and employing many people. The trailer business was his favorite from inception to closing 26 years later. It provided the first jobs and work experiences for his children, with Mary also helping out for many years. He and Mary worked hard to provide for and raise their family. All in all, David was a worker, from the farm to the businesses, for his family, and for the Lord. He was very generous with the fruits of his labors and forgave many debts he was owed along the way. He has left a valiant example for us to follow.
Viewings will be Friday, April 20, 2018, at the LDS Little Cottonwood Stake Center, 1160 East Vine Street, Murray Utah from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 21st from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with the Service beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment: Elysian Burial Gardens.
