April 22, 1922 - March 14, 2018 Alice Condee Stelle, a Las Virgenes pioneer for whom the AC Stelle Middle School is named, died at age 95 in Thousand Oaks. Alice was born to Judge Newcomb Condee and Grace Lawrence Condee of Los Angeles. Alice and Allen Macneil "Mac" Stelle met and married at Stanford University in 1941. They moved to rural Hidden Hills in 1956 where Mac focused on water and Alice on education and together they worked to incorporate Hidden Hills in 1961. Alice was elected to the local board for Las Virgenes Elementary in 1957, and led the fight to prevent the elementary school's annexation into LA Unified. Alice and a friend started the Las Virgenes Enterprise in 1958 to educate the public. After a close race the Las Virgenes Unified School District was formed. Alice served as trustee for 25 years. Alice served two terms as a director of the California School Board Association; was a founder of the Las Virgenes American Field Service chapter and of the Las Virgenes unit of the League of Women Voters; and a member of the Valley Stanford Club, the Calabasas Historical Society, the Conejo Future Foundation, Law Advocates of Los Angeles, and the Assistance League of San Fernando Valley. She was also a Guardian ad Litem for abused or neglected teens. Alice and Mac provided a home for many including unwed pregnant mothers in the 1960's and later 17 teenage foster children, up to four at a time. For their combined leadership and inspiration, Alice and Mac received many awards. Alice was pre-deceased by her husband of 73 years, and by her eldest son Larry Stelle. She is survived by son Doug of San Clemente and daughters Debbie of Canoga Park, Betsy Blum of Coarsegold, Jeanie Blount of Truckee, daughter-in-law Carole Stelle of Huntington Beach, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and her sister, Lois Seed of Carlsbad CA. A public celebration of life at the A.C. Stelle Middle School will be held April 21 at 2 pm. Gifts may be made in Alice's memory to the AC Stelle Middle School Library Media Center.
